Starlink Introduces $100 Congestion Charge for Certain Subscribers

Starlink has implemented a new $100 congestion charge for new subscribers in areas with high network usage. This one-time fee applies to customers activating new residential service plans in regions where network congestion is affecting speeds. The charge is detailed on the Starlink website, stating that it may apply when purchasing a new plan or changing the service address. According to reports, the charge is affecting subscribers in several U.S. states, including Texas, Florida, and Ohio, where Starlink speeds have been slower due to increased demand.

Why the Congestion Charge?

Starlink’s rapid growth and the resulting network strain in some areas have led to reduced internet speeds. The congestion charge is aimed at addressing this issue by funding infrastructure improvements. The company has stated that the charge is temporary and will be removed once network capacity is improved. Additionally, if customers return their Starlink hardware within 30 days, the congestion charge will be refunded.

Starlink provides internet via a constellation of satellites, bringing high-speed internet to areas underserved by traditional broadband. Residential services are priced at $120 per month, and as part of a current promotion (ending October 5), new customers can purchase Starlink hardware at a discounted price of $299, down from the usual $499.

Affected Regions and Impact

According to PCMag, customers in several states, including Texas, Florida, Kansas, Ohio, and Virginia, are experiencing the congestion fee due to Starlink’s limited capacity in these areas. In a 2022 report, PCMag noted that Starlink’s growing popularity had led to slower speeds for some users, particularly in congested regions. This fee now appears to be a step toward managing the high demand until more satellites can be deployed to improve performance.

Customer Satisfaction and Starlink’s Growth

Despite these challenges, Starlink continues to perform well in customer satisfaction ratings. The satellite internet provider is often seen as outperforming traditional telecom options, especially in rural and remote areas. Telecompetitor recently reported that Starlink consistently ranks high in key customer satisfaction metrics, making it a favored option for those needing reliable internet access.
